Who are we?

A fellowship of churches which confess the Lord Jesus Christ as God and Saviour according to the Scriptures and, therefore, seek to fulfill together their common calling to the glory of one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Serving the four Atlantic Provinces of Canada.

We have come together,

Because we believe in God.

We intend to stay together,

In the name of Jesus Christ.

We will strive to grow together,

At the calling of the Holy Spirit.

Let us now find in each place

The things we can do together, to praise God,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

To the Members and Friends of the Atlantic Ecumenical Council:

You will recall that Rev. Bob Mills, on behalf of the Council, mailed a questionnaire last spring asking the question about whether you saw the Atlantic Ecumenical Council as a viable and helpful entity to the local ecumenical Church Council or denomination that you represent. Thank you very much for those who did respond and we do appreciate your openness and honesty. We received a total of eight responses out of 18 that were sent out with five giving an affirmative response and three a negative response. At our Executive meeting in Sackville, NB on November 18, 2011, we agreed to write each of our members in response to the questionnaire results.

In light, then, of the response to the questionnaire and our own experience over the last few years, we as an Executive feel the Atlantic Ecumenical Council as it has existed should be put on hold, retaining the present Executive for organizational purposes and cutting the fee for member churches in half for the coming year. We would see the Executive continuing to exist as a contact for churches and councils in the Atlantic area for ecumenical endeavours. We would as well continue in discernment mode and would welcome input from our members for guidance and information exchange while on this discernment road.

You will find a copy of our constitution on the AEC website which may be found at http://hfxlnbg.pccatlantic.ca/AEC/. You will also find a summary of the discussion that we had at the Executive meeting in the minutes of that meeting which are attached. We do trust and hope that you and your Council or your denomination will continue to assist us in our discernment by raising this matter in your Councils or denominational structures and providing us with feedback as to the direction the AEC should go. We would also ask that the minutes be circulated to the members of your council, your denominational structure and/or board so that they can be kept in touch with this task at hand.

Included with the minutes for your information is a press release concerning Kairos and its application for funding from CIDA which the AEC Executive agreed by email to circulate to you. We thank you for all the assistance you can provide.

Yours truly,

John A. C. Wilson (Rev.)

Secretary of the Atlantic Ecumenical Council

On behalf of the AEC Executive

Calling Canadian Church Composers!

The international resources for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in 2014 are being prepared by a Canadian writing team. Church musicians and composers from across Canada are invited to submit original hymns, praise choruses, or shorter songs for worship for possible inclusion with the resources for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity worldwide in 2014.

The theme that we have chosen for the week is “Has Christ Been Divided?” based on the biblical text of 1 Corinthians 1:1-17. Submissions should be suitable for congregational singing in a variety of ecumenical contexts around the world. They should include words in either French or English, and preferably in both languages. Other languages may also be included, provided that translation into English or French is included as well.

Successful submissions will be focussed on prayer for the unity of the Christian Church and may relate directly to the biblical text from 1 Corinthians 1:1-17. They will be distributed freely with the international resources, so the copyright will need to allow for free use of the music and words for worship and prayer gatherings related to the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2014.

Please make all submissions by Thursday, May 31, 2012 to the Rev. Amanda Currie by email to music@ecumenism.net or by mail to 436 Spadina Crescent E, Saskatoon, SK, S7K 3G6.
